The world's largest iceberg is moving after 30 years

The world's largest iceberg is on the move after more than 30 years stuck at the bottom of the ocean.

The iceberg, called A23a, broke off from the Antarctic coastline in 1986. But it quickly sank into the Weddell Sea, becoming, essentially, an ice island.

With an area of ??almost 4,000 square km (1,500 square miles), it is more than twice the size of Greater London.

A23a was part of a massive eruption from the White Continent's Filchner Ice.

A23a has gained momentum in recent months, driven by winds and currents, and is now crossing the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Like most icebergs from the Weddell sector, A23a will almost certainly be thrown into the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which will hurl it toward the South Atlantic in a path that has become known as "iceberg alley."/ CNA
