There is no radioactive hazard at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant because the steam comes out of circuits that are not in contact with the reactor core.

The director of ENEA's nuclear safety department, Alessandro Dodaro, told ANSA.

"It's a steam leak that happened in one of the plant's steam generators. It's circuits that are not in contact with the reactor core; they take very hot water and exchange it with other water that becomes steam and turns the turbine," said the expert again.

The steam that escapes, he noted, "is not radioactive, but 100% pure water vapor, like the one that comes out of the cooling tower of nuclear power plants." 

What has been carried out at the power plant, he added, is a 'cold shutdown', for which 'in a few days the reactor water will reach lower temperatures'. It is a very peaceful situation"./ CNA
