Transaction finalized/ UNIQA leaves Albania, Avni Ponari buys all shares of

Austrian insurance group Uniqa announced the successful completion of the transaction for the sale of Sigal in Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia. The company's shares have been sold to its founder, businessman Avni Ponari.

“UNIQA has successfully completed the sale of its companies in Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia. The transfer to the long-term co-shareholder and founder took place as planned, in the second quarter of 2025 after receiving all official approvals. With this strategic step, the company is continuously focusing even more strongly on its profitable core markets in Central and Eastern Europe in line with its ‘UNIQA 3.0 Growing Impact’ strategy,” the Austrian group announced in an official statement.

Sigal was founded in 1999 by businessmen Shyqyri Duraku, Llazar Angjeli, Avni Ponari and Alessandro Shtylla. For two and a half decades, it has been the largest insurance company in Albania.

In 2007, about 90 percent of the company's shares were sold to the Austrian group Uniqa for a price of almost 11 million euros, while Avni Ponari retained 10 percent of the shares.

“The sale to the founder and long-time co-shareholder of SIGAL UNIQA Group Austria ensures a swift transfer and maximum continuity for customers, employees and partners,” Uniqa stated when announcing the transaction for the resale of shares to Ponari and its departure from Albania.

The parties to the transaction have stated that the purchase price is subject to confidentiality and have not yet made it public.

But a confidential source told Kapital that it is a transaction worth 60-70 million euros, which would make the sale of Sigal one of the largest private transactions recorded in Albania./ Kapitali.al
