More than 15 cases of "modern slavery" are recorded in Oxfordshire in England every month, says a report published by the BBC.
In cases of slavery, the report refers to those forced to steal, beg, deal drugs or be used for prostitution.
Cases also included a brothel in a hostel where long-term residents were being financially exploited by the owner, said anti-slavery co-ordinator Nicola Bell.
A report for Oxford said 379 cases were recorded between January 2022 and December 2023.
Of these cases, 43 were under protection.
Bell described several other cases as successful, including the closure of two brothels and the case of a man who took shelter after being threatened by drug dealers.
Justine Carter, director of anti-slavery charity Unseen, said: “It's what we see all over the country. In the UK, there are an estimated 122,000 people at any one time in situations of slavery and exploitation."
More than half of the victims in Oxfordshire were British, Albanian or Romanian, the study says./ CNA
