On the threshold of the national holiday of independence, throughout Albania, we received the bitter news of the death of the Albanian Prof. Martin Luther King. Sami Repishti. The patriot, researcher and defender of human rights and freedoms, the icon of the anti-communist resistance, the student of the Italian and French universities where he received his doctorate as an excellent student, the one who disagreed with the current policy of 34 years in defense of human rights and freedoms for the politically persecuted Albanian Prof. Sami Repishti, the renaissance of the twentieth century, also met his death on a day marked on the day of the flag. To him the flag that was dedicated to him in defense of the national issue, that took his voice to Washington for the defense of Kosovo.

The suppression of Sami Repishti/ Besim Ndregjoni: He was the Albanian Martin

Prof. Peter the Priest wrote: Prof. Dr. Sami Repishti is at the head of the intellectuals of the Albanian-American diaspora. He is a worthy successor of the Renaissance, because he faithfully implemented their high ideals. He, together with Arshi Pipa and Martin Camaj, make up an elite trio of Shkodrans, who with their lives and works furthered the patriotic and intellectual mission of the Renaissance and of the patriots of the Second World War and after it. With concrete actions in the homeland and in Kosovo to closely assist the processes of democratization and the establishment of the rule of law, it deserves to be called an independent institution. Sami Repishti has written several hundred articles, over twenty books (some co-authored) and two literary works "Pika Loti (written in 1959 - 1963 and published in 1997 and 2009) and Under the shadow of Rozafës (2004). These two works are part of Albanian realist literature, and more specifically, they constitute the foundations of our literature called prison literature, which is read today with pleasure and great benefit. There is revealed the life full of suffering, the resistance and the deeds of the people condemned by the Albanian communist dictatorship, an aspect of our life, which the dictatorship had distorted and kept secret. His greatest success was, and remains, the victory of yours against hate. I have never allowed myself to hate myself, despite all the strong opposition I have shown when I disagreed. Thus, on the first day when he arrived in Albania on August 9, 1992, he declared in front of the journalists in Rinas: 'I return to my homeland with love for everyone and hatred for no one', not an original statement, but a cornerstone for his thoughts, borrowed from President Abraham Lincoln's speech at the end of the Civil War at Gettysburg PA during which more than 600,000 Americans were killed. Some of his generalizations about the state of Albania in transition are proverbial. Such are the sayings: "Crime is not punished, and the criminal is back in power wearing the clothes of the 'European socialist'. A power is born from a lie, held at gunpoint. A society crumbled under the weight of the crime committed by indoctrinated executioners. The political situation continues to be chaotic and the economic situation is desperate."

Elez Biberaj, the former director of the Voice of America, writes about Repishti: "After many decades as a leader in the academic field and in community opinion, Professor Repishti continues to inspire generations of Albanians in search of a more democratic and fairer society. He is a great Albanian-American, a true Albanian patriot, a complete scholar, and a man of principles, who never stopped fighting in the name of what he believed in. Today we parted physically with Prof. Repishti, but the homeland remembers him in the constellation of great scholars, who gave Albania its independence, those who built the first Albanian state, those who fought fascism and communism, those who gave independence to Kosovo, his voice that rang in the American Congress for the rights and freedoms of the Albanians will no longer be heard in the eternal world, but his work will shine for generations to come. Albanians and will be a guide for future generations to build Albania, to protect freedom. It has been a great honor for me to have had the opportunity to work closely with Professor Repishti in this post-communist period and I am very grateful for his continued support and friendship. In front of your work and contribution, thousands of Albanian families who went through your ordeal of suffering bow down with respect, and have a message "Enlighten the mind of the Albanians to protect freedom" rest in peace in the land of freedom, where you gave your life for the nation and homeland. Farewell to the great Repishti. Today we need You more than yesterday./ CNA
