Albania and Britain start the agreement for the transfer of prisoners/England

Albania and Great Britain will begin to implement the agreement on the transfer of Albanian prisoners to Albania.

200 Albanian prisoners who are serving their sentence in prisons in England and Wales will return to Albania within two years and will serve the remaining part of their sentence in Albania.  

The British Ministry of Justice has announced that it will be Britain that will pay the costs of the prisoners throughout the duration of their sentence in our country and Albania will be able to increase investments for the further improvement of conditions in the prison system. .

This decision came after the Minister of Justice, Lord Ballamy KC, said in Parliament that prisons are overcrowded and the capacity has gone up to 99%.

He said that the Government is concerned about the increase in the number of prisoners and how it is approaching its upper limit.

The Ministry of Justice said the new deal would "free up" prison space in England and Wales and double the number of offenders without UK citizenship removed each year.

"I am grateful to my Albanian counterpart, Ulsi Manja, for his efforts to shape our growing partnership on justice issues. The public expects that foreign criminals should serve their sentences abroad, not in our prisons at the expense of taxpayers .Working with our international partners is an essential part of making this possible," said Justice Secretary Alex Chalk.

Meanwhile, Albania's Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja, is understood to have told him that this new agreement demonstrates the strong partnership between the UK and Albanian governments.

" Two years after the agreement on the transfer of prisoners from the United Kingdom to Albania was ratified, we have concluded a technical agreement that will benefit both countries.

At its core, every Albanian convict in the United Kingdom will be given the opportunity to serve the remainder of their sentence in Albania, near their families, while we increase our efforts to ensure the modernization of the Albanian penitentiary system," he said. .
