The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, commemorated today December 8, 1990, describing it as one of the most important dates in the modern history of Albania and as the “birthday of Albanian freedoms.” In a message addressed to the students of December, he expressed gratitude for their role in the overthrow of the communist regime.

Berisha emphasized that 35 years ago, on December 8, 1990, students of the University of Tirana and other higher education institutions, led by Azem Hajdari, launched protests that marked the beginning of the democratic revolution in Albania.

He recalled that the first student protest took place with the motto "Freedom, Democracy, Albania as Europe", a call that, according to him, marked the division of eras and the opening of the path towards political pluralism in the most monistic country on the continent.

Berisha also focused on the difficulties and dangers the students faced that December, emphasizing that they stood up "alone, abandoned by Albanians and by Europe," at a time when the communist regime was executing young people at the border and suppressing any attempt at change.

December 8 is marked today as National Youth Day, while the Decemberists and the history of the 1990 student movement continue to remain a symbol of the fall of communism in Albania./ CNA
