Fuel price increase/ DP proposes legal package

DP MP Eno Bozdo has issued a statement to the media from the Presidency of the Assembly regarding the increase in fuel prices in our country.

Bozdo states that Albania is one of the countries with the highest fiscal burden on fuel and consequently has the highest prices. He has also presented a legal package proposed by the DP to ease the burden on citizens and reduce the price of oil.

Among other things, he also spoke about the management of strategic oil reserves, while describing yesterday's statement by Prime Minister Edi Rama as proof of the government's failure in this area.

"For every liter of diesel, every citizen pays 120 lek in taxes to the state. This makes Albania one of the countries with the highest fiscal burden on fuel and consequently with the highest fuel prices in Europe. Unlike Albania, EU countries offer public services of high standards, returning these taxes to citizens in the form of concrete benefits.

Through this legal package, we propose: reducing the turnover tax to the level it was in 2014, applying a variable excise tax according to the practice followed by Italy, where the VAT surplus from the increase in fuel prices is used to automatically reduce the excise tax, providing a fair mechanism that benefits citizens.

The implementation of these measures would bring an immediate reduction in the price of oil, from 200 lek to 175 lek. This would be a great relief for Albanian citizens. Regarding the management of strategic oil reserves, currently according to public statements, oil reserves in Albania cover only 30 days of consumption.

While the EU directive requires coverage for 90 days. Yesterday Edi Rama declared that energy security is at risk. This statement is proof of the government's failure in managing these reserves. This fact constitutes a serious violation of Albania's commitments in the integration process.

"Only in Albania does an extreme increase in oil prices occur as soon as an international crisis occurs. The legal package proposed by us is applicable in many countries in the region and the EU. The approval of this package is urgent for citizens ," said Bozdo. /CNA
