Parashqevi Simaku: When I left Albania, I had no money

Albanian singer Parashqevi Simaku has spoken about her departure from Albania in 1992, when she fled her birthplace to move to the United States of America. In an interview with journalist Blendi Fevziu, Simaku revealed that at the time she left Albania, she had no money.

Simaku said that he initially fled to Italy, at his mother's behest, to meet his brother, who was among the first immigrants and had not come to Albania for years.

The singer revealed that she arrived in New York in March 1992.

 "I was simple. I didn't dress up. I chose the drama department at the University because I heard my father didn't study music so that I could improve my voice. I was lucky that they loved me very much. When I went to concerts, I couldn't wait to return to Albania. My mother asked me when I would return. I had a vision for singing when I was young. My mother told me to go see my brother in Italy, who was among the first immigrants. I went to the embassy. When I left Albania, I didn't have any money. Then a woman came from New York and bought me a Calabrian passport," said Simaku
