New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on at least one criminal charge and is under federal investigation.

Adams will surrender to authorities early next week, US media reports.

Details about the exact charges remained unclear, but they are believed to be related to allegations the Turkish government illegally financed his mayoral campaign in exchange for an endorsement from the Turkish consulate in Manhattan, according to sources.

Meanwhile, The City reports that the mayor faces charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, after accepting donations from foreign entities.

However, the concrete indictment, the first for an acting mayor of New York, is expected to be revealed this Thursday by the American prosecutor, Damian Williams.

The mayor, in previous statements, has stated that he was being persecuted by the federal government for speaking about the immigrant crisis.

"I always knew that if I were to lead the New Yorkers, I would be a target - and a target I was."
