Bektashi State inside Tirana/Ramkaj: In 13 years no efforts have been made to
Arben Ramkaj

The head of the Interreligious Cooperation Center in Elbasan, Arben Ramkaj, has commented on the recent statements of Prime Minister Edi Rama about the creation of the Bektashi state during a meeting with Albanians in New York.

Ramkaj says that for 13 years no effort has been made to strengthen the positions of religious communities, so when such a proposal comes out in the open there will be such a reaction.

"I listened carefully to the speech of the Prime Minister, who was invited by the Albanian activist Mark Gjonaj in New York. Despite the irritation of some members in the hall, like many Albanians today, the Prime Minister changed his position on the need for a sovereign Bektashi order. Contrary to the quote in the New York Times, where he claimed to be promoting a tolerant Islam, today he said that this need is due to the disappearance of the Bektashi community over the decades. This argument is also debatable, due to the fact that, despite the brutality of the communist regime, the religious reality of Albanians has not changed fundamentally during the last 100 years. Plus, the Bektashi community had an admirable growth in the last census, unlike any other religious community. .

Over the years, in my public appearances, I have made some proposals that I consider healthy to avoid debates that promote ambiguity and retorts of a religious nature, which are really harmful for the future. The official recognition of the cleric's status is essential, as a restoration of his dignity after the violent communist oppression. The return of confiscated property from religious communities with little stable support should have been accomplished in time.

The non-interference of religious communities in state affairs is a fundamental principle that must be preserved, maintaining the separation between religion and state. Increasing the budget for the support of religious communities is a must, creating a fund dedicated to the preservation of religious objects and the promotion of religious education. In addition, the creation of a state secretariat that pursues matters of religion would guarantee freedom and equality for all religious communities in accordance with the Constitution.

However, during these 13 years, no effort has been made to strengthen the positions of religious communities. Therefore, when such a proposal comes out in the open, it is logical for society to react, and this has nothing to do with history or with the status that the Bektashi community has had since the 20s, when the religious communities have agreed on their position", said Ramkaj./ CNA
