The number of young people decreased rapidly from 2019-2023, but those looking

From 2019 to 2023, the number of young people aged 15-29 decreased by 94 thousand, or by 13.7%, but on the other hand, the number of young people looking for work has increased.

According to official INSTAT data, in 2019, there were 681,552 people aged 15-29, while 15,372 people were registered as job seekers in the employment offices.

In the last quarter of 2023, the population aged 15-29 was 587,888 people, while over 17,880 young people were registered at the employment offices as unemployed, or 16% more than in 2019.

Although the labor market in recent years has reported a shortage of employees in all activities, youth unemployment is increasing. Even in recent years, even in the public sector that was once in high demand, there are many vacancies, especially in the districts.

Labor market experts analyze that the increase in youth unemployment comes as a result of a mismatch between the supply of work and the demand that young people have.

Year after year, education in our country has lost its connection with the labor market and the development model. Educated youth have few sectors in which to engage, as the economy is concentrated in labor-intensive sectors such as service, construction and fashion workers.

After the pandemic, the trend of unemployment has increased among young people. In the last quarter of 2020, unemployment in the 15-29 age group was 21.7%, while in the last quarter of last year it reached 22%.

The comparisons show that even at the height of the pandemic, when overall unemployment rose, youth unemployment is softer than it is now.

Other surveys that have measured potential emigration have shown that the difficulties in employing young people are the main cause of their emigration. Almost 80% of people who leave the country are young people under 30 years old and the reasons for leaving are related to efforts to improve their economic situation.

The data show that young people have more difficulty finding work compared to other working age groups.

The official youth unemployment rate for 15-29 year olds is 22.0% in 2023. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, the youth unemployment rate has increased by 0.6 percentage points, while compared to the third quarter 2023, this indicator decreased by 0.02 percentage points.

For the 30-64 age group, the unemployment rate was 7.9% in the last quarter of 2023. In annual terms, this indicator has increased by 0.3 percentage points and compared to the previous quarter there is an increase of 0.4 percentage points ./ Monitor.al
