Hello Xama

A number of journalists, local and foreign organizations as well as diplomatic missions expressed solidarity with journalist Ola Xama, who has been targeted by several media outlets due to her investigations into corruption.

Fellow journalists, human rights organizations and various diplomatic missions on Friday expressed solidarity with journalist Ola Xama, who has been the target of a smear campaign by several media outlets because of her investigative writings.

"On International Women's Day, we celebrate the achievements of women and girls who are champions of women's rights and gender equality," the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands wrote in a social media post.

"Today, more than ever, we stand in support of women like journalist Ola Xama. Such models fight for the truth and set the standards for women and men who contribute to building strong institutions and fighting corruption in Albania," the statement, which was also shared by the European Delegation office in Tirana, reads further.

The European Federation of Journalists wrote: "The smear campaign against investigative journalist Ola Xama must stop. On International Women's Day, we stand in solidarity with all women journalists who are targeted because they are journalists and women."

Xama came under attack from a number of portals and print media last summer after the publication of the investigation The Tirana incinerator project was proposed by Erion Veliaj, says SPAK.

After the publication of the investigation, Veliaj wrote in a private message to Xama, declaring her a "hitman for hire" and a "militant", a terminology that was multiplied by various online portals and DITA newspaper for days.

Xama filed a defamation lawsuit against Dita and Prapaskena in connection with these defamatory campaigns. A new wave of attacks followed the indictment.

Earlier, the Safe Journalists Network, the "Professional Journalists of Albania" association and the Online and Social Media Institute (IMOS Albania) expressed solidarity with Xama, considering the attack as an attempt to force the journalist to remain silent./ Reporter.al
