Former Prime Minister Aleksandër Meksi celebrates his 85th birthday this Friday.

Meksi was born in Gjirokastër in 1939. He completed his university studies in the field of construction at the Faculty of Engineering of the State University of Tirana and was a researcher of medieval history.

Aleksandër Meksi holds the scientific degrees of Candidate of Sciences (1982) and Doctor of Sciences (1988) as well as the title of Professor (1995).

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he became involved in politics, becoming the founder of the Democratic Party and the drafter of its charter. In one of the early votes, its chairman managed to be elected, but then Sali Berisha took the leadership of the DP.

With the victory of the DP in 1992, he was elected prime minister of the country, a position he held until March 9, 1997, exactly one day after he turned 58 years old.

The Mexican government was the first to initiate reforms that paved the way for the market economy.
