Interference with Article 238 of the Criminal Code/ Lamallari: Whoever threatens

Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, spoke this Monday regarding one of the important points that are expected to change with the new Criminal Code.  

In a television interview, Lamallari emphasized that the intervention in Article 238 related to intimidation will serve as a special protection for journalists.

 "We successfully concluded in 2025 the amendments to the Criminal Code with the interim conditions that advance Albania's journey into the European family. This included several directives that were addressed in the existing code and of course the government found it appropriate, as part of the discussions we had with the journalist community, who expressed their demands and suggestions. This was the reason why Albania decided to take this political step to move towards the decriminalization of defamation specifically for journalists, where specifically Article 120 of the Criminal Code exempts from criminal prosecution journalists who are reporting during their exercise. This offense is qualified so that someone who threatens a journalist will not be punished the same as an ordinary citizen, because a journalist serves transparency and sharing information with the public", said Lamallari./CNA
