EU-Western Balkans summit to be held in Brussels today

EU and Western Balkans leaders will meet today in Brussels. The meeting, chaired by President Antonio Costa, will serve as an opportunity to demonstrate and reaffirm the strength of the EU-Western Balkans strategic relationship and the benefits it brings to citizens. High Representative Kaja Kallas will also attend.

At the end of the summit, the EU-Western Balkans Summit Declaration will be issued. The summit will note the importance of political and economic relations between the EU and the Western Balkans partners, especially in the current geopolitical context and the need for ever stronger ties between the EU and the Western Balkans.

The summit will underline the importance of tangible progress in reforms, approximation with the acquis, regional cooperation, good neighborly relations and reconciliation.

The EU and the Western Balkans have a shared responsibility to address common challenges. They will discuss joint actions and efforts in key areas:

- migration management
- visa policy
- combating trafficking in human beings
- border management
- the fight against corruption, drug trafficking and organised crime
- preventing and combating terrorism and violent extremism

The summit is part of the implementation of the European Council's strategic agenda for the years 2024-2029. The next summit will take place in June 2026 in Montenegro. /CNA
