Maritime border issue/ Former minister: Greece can claim that the measurement is

Former Foreign Minister Edmond Panariti commented today regarding Albania's open maritime border issue with Greece.

Invited to A2 CNN, Panariti said that the decision of the Hague Court could produce painful action for Albania, as Greece could raise a claim and demand that the islands have the same equivalence with the continental part in terms of measurements.

"The biggest issue is the maritime border. As far as I understand, the issue will be left to the Hague Court, but so far we have not taken any executive steps. The Albanian side has not taken any steps so far. However, let's assume that the issue will go to The Hague. First, The Hague is an arbitration court that can produce painful action for us, which we do not even have the right to appeal.

Albania in this case loses large water areas. The previous agreement was overturned by the Constitutional Court precisely for this reason. Bushati, in 2012, reached an agreement where Albania regained 40 square km of area, but it was not ratified by the Greek Parliament. That agreement remained a draft. Now, by passing the maritime package in The Hague, it risks losing this agreement as well.

"In my opinion, we should not take the border issue with Greece to The Hague. I have my reservations about the capabilities of our side in The Hague, in terms of preparing documents for the border issue. I am convinced that Greece in The Hague will raise the claim that the measurement be done from the islands," said Panariti./CNA
