195 million euro VAT fraud / Europol hits the criminal cell, action also in

During a Europol action spanning 17 countries, 14 people were arrested who are accused of having orchestrated a massive VAT fraud of 195 million euros.

The arrests are the result of an investigation led by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Munich and Cologne (Germany) with the support of Europol. 

Among those arrested are some of the highest criminal actors, who have been on Europol's radar in recent years, in the field of VAT fraud.

Over 180 searches were conducted simultaneously in Albania, Austria, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and United Kingdom. Over 680 tax and police investigators have supported investigative measures. 

During the search, law enforcement seized large amounts of smartphones, worth more than 15.3 million euros, as well as a yacht worth 3 million euros and 1.2 million euros in cash and cryptocurrencies.

Meanwhile, several cars have been seized, including a Rolls Royce, a BMW and a Range Rover. Jewelry, luxury watches and 2.5 kilograms of gold were also found in the suspects' apartments.

The investigation revealed that the alleged masterminds of the VAT fraud scheme created a complex criminal ecosystem that allowed them to defraud up to €195 million through several criminal schemes involving the sale of small electronic devices such as smartphones ./ CNA
