Marta Kos: Albania can become an EU member even before 2030

The European Commissioner for EU Enlargement, Marta Kos, has stated that Albania could become part of the bloc even before 2030.

At the Atlantic Council, Kos spoke about the progress of Albania and Montenegro regarding membership negotiations, where he said that no dates are set for this process, because it is based on merit.

“In the Western Balkans, we have two main candidates, Montenegro which hopes to close all its chapters by the end of this year, and then Albania which has expressed its determination to close negotiations by the end of next year. Usually, we do not set dates in the enlargement process, because this process is based on merit. So, it depends on how the candidate countries are achieving results. But of course, we support their ambitious objectives. First, Montenegro, with 650 thousand inhabitants, could become the 28th EU member state. It is also possible that Albania could become an EU member by 2030 or even earlier,”  she said.

Among other things, the commissioner emphasized that a country becomes a member of the EU either with all full rights or it does not join.

"There is no "light" membership. Either you are a member and then you get all the rights. Or you are not a member and you don't get the rights. But of course, I understand this letter from Mr. Vu?i? and Rama, in the sense that if the EU is going to have problems, you know, to continue with the enlargement process, they would be happy with something less. That is their choice. I do not support this, because my role is to help those countries become full members of the EU. The simple rule is this: if a country meets all the reforms and criteria, it should become a full member of the European Union. That is how our European Treaty is built ," Kos said.

She further stated that the European Union cannot allow a country that weakens the union to join.

"I think we cannot afford to have a new member state that will weaken us. We are not a group of friends, we are a community of values, and once a state wants to be part of this community of values ??and all the benefits, it has to behave well and it has to be a good guy, not a bad guy. We also have to follow the interests of the member states, their concerns,"  the commissioner said. /CNA
