The Constitutional Court tells Veliaj: Enough charges, go to trial

The Constitutional Court has announced that it has dismissed the appeal filed by the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, regarding the annulment of Judge Etleva Deda's decision of February 9, 2026, to proceed to trial on the merits of the case against him and 29 other people.

The Constitutional Court tells Veliaj: Enough charges, go to trial
Constitutional Court decision

The decision is legally unappealable, but as is the case with Veliaj, since he is mayor, he has other rights, unlike all citizens who are equal before the law.

Veliaj had also requested the invalidity of all hearings held in his criminal proceedings, as well as the finding of the incompatibility of several articles with the Constitution regarding the SPAK and the GJKKO.

Today, the Constitutional Court has rejected all of Erion Veliaj's requests. Even though it is the same court that a few days ago issued a decision that, if you read the positions of some members, was weaker than the municipal lawyers.

The Constitutional Court has not considered the appeal in a plenary session and the response to the mayor, put more briefly and clearly, is: Go to trial, the charges are sufficient.

This is the decision that Judge Etleva Deda has given in the GJKKO case. So, she has put Mayor Veliaj and his associates on trial.

This is what Erion Veliaj has sought to overthrow, so that it should not be tried, that it should be invalid, that it should not go to a court session and be tried. Once again, we clearly see that with his actions Veliaj is not only postponing the sessions, but apparently wants to not be tried at all. So he opens fronts in both the Constitutional and Administrative Courts, perhaps knowing clearly what facts the prosecutors have and how much he can be punished.

The Constitutional Court (full of Veliaj's friends and suicide bombers) has given a "brick" answer and has punched Erion Veliaj in the face: Go to trial, the charges are there. Because your request cannot be reviewed and when his four suicide bombers tell him, the whole situation is clearly understood.

Judge Etleva Deda, in her decision dated February 9, said that the charges are sufficient and the case should go to trial.

Now Erion Veliaj, Plarent Ndreca, two defendants, one also in the role of lawyer, must go to court and be tried.

Even though they declared victory in the Constitutional Court, what was not a victory a few days ago, today this court has said directly, the request is not accepted, it is not included in the session, and the decision of Judge Etleva Deda is left in force.

So, against Erion Veliaj, the accusations are sufficient, the case should go to trial, the mayor and his associates should be tried. /CNA
