The recent visit of the Archbishop of Albania, His Beatitude, Archbishop Ioannis, to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, demonstrates the close spiritual and ecclesiastical connection between the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate has played a key role in the history of the Church of Albania. In 1937, during the time of the late Archbishop Kristofor Kisi, Ecumenical Patriarch Veniamin granted the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Church of Albania, thus recognizing its ecclesiastical and administrative autonomy as an independent ecclesiastical entity.

After the dark communist regime, it was once again the Ecumenical Patriarchate that stood by our church, this time sending its chosen son Archbishop Anastas to lead a completely ruined Church, which he did with dedication until the end of his life.

Just a few months after his election as Archbishop of Albania, His Eminence Joani chooses the path that the church has taught for more than 2,000 years, visiting the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Archbishop John's visit to Constantinople, which included prayers, a meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew, and visits to historic churches such as Saint Sophia and the Monastery of Hora, confirmed and renewed once again the connection of our church with the Patriarchal Throne.

With this visit, the Archbishop of Albania emphasizes the importance of the unity of Orthodoxy and the continuity of the tradition that connects us beyond geographical and national borders, keeping alive the message of faith and love in Jesus Christ./CNA
