"They are a minority"/ Greece also reacts to Zvërnec

The Greek Foreign Ministry has issued an official statement regarding the events that took place the day before in Zvërnec. According to the statement, a Greek citizen was injured in the incidents recorded during the protest.

Meanwhile, official Athens, which has described the residents who protested as a minority, emphasizes the need for respect for the rule of law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deep concern about the incidents that occurred yesterday, May 30, 2026, in Zvërnec, Albania, during a protest by residents regarding their property rights, among whom was a Greek citizen who was injured. The Embassy of Greece in Tirana immediately took all appropriate steps to ensure that he receives all necessary consular and medical assistance.

The Greek Embassy in Tirana also made a request to the Albanian side, demanding a full explanation of the incident and accountability. In this context, we note the initial response of the Albanian authorities.

We underline the need for full respect for the rule of law, including the protection of the rights and property of members of the Greek National Minority, as well as the importance of effective protection of environmentally protected areas, in the context of approximation with the European acquis, compliance with which is a prerequisite for progress in the accession process.

We recall that yesterday, during the protest held in Zvërnec, there was a clash between citizens and employees of a private security company. Regarding the claims of yesterday's protest, it is reported that the fenced territory is completely private property, with a regular mortgage document, as well as with legal authorization for the fence. /CNA
