INSTAT: During January, the population of Albania decreased by 31 thousand

The Albanian population has decreased by over 31 thousand people compared to a year ago.

According to INSTAT data , on January 1, 2023, the population suffered a decrease of 1.1%, compared to January 1, 2022.

The counties with the lowest number of births are Gjirokastra, Berati and Dibra.

As a consequence, this has caused the average age of the population in the country to increase, approaching 40.

The number of the Albanian population decreased by registering the figure of 2 million and 761 inhabitants during the year 2023 from 2 million and 793 thousand in 2022.

The decrease in the number of the population in Albania is directly related to the low number of births and the number of deaths.

The natural population increase or ratio (birth-death) recorded 690 more births than deaths, which is considered the lowest level except during the pandemic period. Last year, over 24,000 babies were born, suffering a decrease of 9.3%, compared to the previous year.

According to INSTAT, the decrease in population was also influenced by the departure of young people to EU countries. Population estimates on January 1, 2023 show that only one district of the country recorded an increase in population, compared to the previous year, while the other eleven districts recorded a decrease in population. The increase was recorded in Tirana and was 0.6%.

The decrease in the birth rate has also led to the aging of the Albanian population. From the data, it is observed that more than half of the population is aged 38.8 years from 38.2 that were in the same period a year ago. Kukësi is the district with the youngest population, while Gjirokastra has the oldest population, followed by Lezha./ CNA.al
