IGJEUM: High intensity rainfall, increased risk of flooding

The Institute of Geosciences has shared a forecast regarding weather conditions, noting that there will be high-intensity rainfall this afternoon and tomorrow.

In the regions of Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër, Lezhë, Durrës, Tirana, Elbasan, Vlorë and Gjirokastër, there may be flash floods of small mountain rivers and landslides. In urban areas, localized flooding problems may occur in these regions, depending on the state of the sewerage.

According to hydrological calculations, as a result of high-intensity rainfall, an increase in flows and levels in the Mat, Ishëm, Erzen, Shkumbin and Seman rivers is expected tomorrow.

The Vjosa River, the Drin-Buna River, and Lake Shkodra will be at increased risk of flooding throughout today and tomorrow.

Snow and frost:

Snowfall is expected to include areas in the North, East and Southeast of the territory. Snowfall followed by a significant decrease in temperatures and frost may create various problems and difficulties in road transport.

Precipitation:

This afternoon and tomorrow, intense rainfall is expected in the districts of Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër, Lezhë, Durrës, Tirana, Elbasan, Vlorë and Gjirokastër, while moderate rainfall is expected in the other districts. The rainfall is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms.

In the North, East and Southeast at altitudes above 600 m above sea level, precipitation will be in the form of snow.

Temperature:

Tomorrow, minimum and maximum air temperatures are expected to reach:

on the coast: 7 / 14 °C

in lowlands: 6 / 13 °C

in mountainous areas: -1 / 7 °C

Wind:

This afternoon and tomorrow the wind is expected to blow moderately to strongly on the coast and in mountainous areas.
