The Special Court finds nine women repatriated from Syria guilty

The Special Court in Albania found guilty nine women repatriated from Syria, accused of participating in a terrorist organization and participating in combat activities in a foreign country.

Although judge Rudina Palloj announced the sentence of seven years of imprisonment for each of them and eventually they were placed on probation for five years.

Through the application of the summary trial, the sentence against them would be reduced to four years and eight months of imprisonment. However, the Prosecutor's Office requested the suspension of their sentence and placement on probation for five years.

In addition, the nine convicted women are forced not to associate with persons investigated or convicted for criminal offenses for which they are accused, as well as not to frequent premises with individuals who have radical attitudes.

The nine women who were found guilty had left for Syria in 2013-2014, the country where their husbands had previously gone and aligned themselves with the terrorist groups Al-Nusra and then the Islamic State.

The court also decided to lift the security measure that prevented the defendants from leaving the country.

According to the data of the Albanian intelligence agencies, about 140 fighters from Albania have gone to Syria and Iraq.

A few years ago, nine people were arrested who were suspected of recruiting fighters for Syria. The Serious Crimes Court in 2016 sentenced them to a total of 126 years in prison.

In the years, through several operations, Albania has repatriated citizens who were in Syria, where they had gone to join terrorist organizations./ CNA
