The railway line of corridor VIII, which starts in Durrës and ends in Pogradec, will be electric. The Albanian Railways has opened the tender with a limited fund of 450 thousand euros, for the design of the electrification of this line, while the deadline for accepting offers is June 3, 2024.

The procedure has been opened on the public procurement website of the European Union, as the project is financed through a grant from the Western Balkans Investment Framework.

According to published data, the consultant will have to carry out field measurements between Durrës and Pogradec, cooperating with the procuring entity and the relevant national and local authorities. Meanwhile, the project will have to be ready within 12 months from the signing of the contract.

For this railway line a little while ago, the European Investment Bank announced that it is offering technical support for the preparation of the project in the Durrës - Rrogozhin and Rrogozhin - Pogradec segments. Also, a little while ago, for the segment from Durres to Rrogozhin, the European Commission granted a grant of 62 million euros, while the total value of the investment is estimated at 120.5 million euros.

The railway line of the rehabilitation project follows the existing one and after the completion of the works it is expected that the trains will have a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. The VIII railway corridor starts from Durrës to Pogradec, where it connects with North Macedonia, in the village of Lin. Some time ago, this corridor was included in the main trans-European transport network, known as TEN T, giving priority to its financing./ SCAN
