France to ban smoking on all beaches
Two small sections of beaches in Cannes are smoke-free

France will ban smoking on all beaches, as well as in public parks, forests and nearby schools, after Emmanuel Macron promised to create the "first smoke-free generation" by 2032.

"From now on, smoking-free areas will be the norm," said Health Minister Aurelien Rousseau.

There are now 7,200 smoke-free areas in France – including Nice, on the French Riviera, which was the first to create a smoke-free beach in 2012.

The government said that instead of smoke-free zones being set up by individual local authorities, the central government would impose a nationwide ban. 

After smoking was banned in French bars and restaurants in 2008 and polls showed widespread approval from the French public. / CNA
