What is the "Babale" issue, the audio-tap that "sunk"

Deputy Ervin Salianji, with a final decision from the Court of Appeal, was sentenced to one year in prison for the file called "Babale".

The Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the Court of Fact given on December 18, 2019.

Ervin Salianji was convicted on the charge of false report for a much talked about and much debated file.

What is the "Babale" file?

In the spring of 2018, the PD deputy came out in a statement to the media and published an audio recording.

Salianji claimed that the brother of the then Minister of the Interior, Fatmir Xhafaj, Agron Xhafaj, was involved in drug trafficking.

According to the audio recording, Fatmir Xhafaj's brother, Agron Xhafaj, communicated with a former trafficker, Albert Veliu, with the nickname Babalja.

But, from the investigations of the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana, it turned out that the audio recording was an edited material.

The person who sometimes voices Agron Xhafaj (in the role), according to investigations, was Fredi Alizoti.

In the investigative file, it is stated that Albert Veliu was accommodated at the PD headquarters in January 2018 and stimulated the conversation with Fredi Alizoti.

Albert Veli's interview was recorded on a pen-and-wire interception device, which he handed over to Ervin Salianji.

Afterwards, the latter came out in a statement to the media and denounced Agron Xhafajn for being related to drug trafficking.
