The governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, once again clarified the news about the possibility to exchange some banknotes without legal tender.

He said that there has been some confusion about the banknotes that go out of circulation.

Sejko informed that it is a question of coins from 1992 to 1996. According to him, the banknotes were removed from the legal tender 12 to 13 years ago, but the Bank of Albania has given individuals the opportunity to exchange the banknotes with the legal tender

"There has been some confusion about the banknotes that come out of circulation. We are talking about coins from 1992 to 1996. Banknotes went out of legal tender 12 to 13 years ago. The Bank of Albania has recently made a reminder of giving individuals the opportunity to exchange their banknotes with legal tender. There are very few in circulation and during this year very few such banknotes have been delivered. They cannot use them in the market. After December 31st they will no longer be able to exchange them for a real value. The public should get the information clearly," said Sejko.

December 31, 2023 is the deadline for the exchange of banknotes without legal tender as follows:

100 Lek, issue of 1993, 1994, 1996, the image of the National Warrior;

100 Lek, issue of 1996, image of Fan S. Noli;

200 Lek, issue of 1992, 1994, 1996, image of Ismail Qemali;

500 Lek, issue of 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, image of girl with sunflower;

500 Lek, issue of 1992, 1994, 1996, image of Naim Frashëri; AND

1000 Lek, issue of 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, image of Skanderbeg.

The above banknotes can continue to be exchanged until December 31, 2023, at any second level bank counter./ CNA
