Census Albania 2023 starts on Monday

In Albania, the Institute of Statistics is expected to start the Population and Housing Census from next Monday, a process that will last for six weeks.

The 2023 Census is the country's most important statistical event, and it will involve over 7,500 surveyors, supervisors and controllers trained by the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT).

They will record data on the population, demographic, social and economic characteristics detailed at the geographical level, related to housing, education, health, and employment.

"Census preparation this year is based on European standards, improved local laws and modern technology. The census of Albania this year follows the recommendations of the United Nations and the European Commission for professional statistics" , said the director of INSTAT, Elsa Dhuli.

In addition to the state budget, the 2023 Census of Albania is also financed by the European Commission, the United Nations, Sweden and Switzerland.

"Albania needs reliable data to design policies and build good public services before dividing the budget. Albania faces demographic challenges, so it needs statistically reliable data to address this issue as well as other issues such as housing, groups in need. This Census and the strengthening of the statistical system in Albania are also important for the process of negotiations for Albania's membership" , said Ambassador Luigi Soreca, Chargé d'Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union in Albania.

He said that Albanian statistics should be of professional quality, directly comparable and according to European standards, so the EU has allocated 4.8 million euros in support of INSTAT.

This is the twelfth Census in 100 years, which takes place in Albania, starting from the first, which was carried out in 1923. The previous censuses on the population were carried out in periods of 5 years and then 10 years.

They requested data with free declaration on the economic and social situation of individuals and families, on housing and other properties, related to living conditions.

After the fall of the communist regime, the INSTAT Census in 2001 and 2011, in addition to basic statistics, collected data on internal and external emigration of residents, as well as on their religious and ethnic affiliation. The census postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic./ VOA
