European Union lawmakers and member states have reached an agreement to revise the bloc's rules on waste shipments and end exports of certain types of waste to third countries that are unable to process it properly. , the EU Parliament said on Friday.

"Exports of certain non-hazardous wastes and their mixtures (...) will be allowed only to those countries that are not members of the OECD that accept and fulfill the criteria for the treatment of such wastes in an environmentally sound manner" , said Parliament.

It is added that compliance with international labor rights will also be taken into account.

In 2021, the European Commission proposed a revamp of EU rules on waste shipments to make it harder for member states to dump them in poorer countries.

"The EU will finally take responsibility for its plastic waste by banning its export to non-OECD countries," Danish lawmaker Pernille Weiss said in a statement.

EU countries must stop sending plastic waste to poorer countries no later than two and a half years after the legislation comes into force, Parliament said.

It was also announced that the rules for the export of plastic waste to countries within the OECD, the group of the world's leading rich countries, will be tightened.

In previous years, around half of the EU's waste exports went to non-OECD countries with weaker waste management rules than the EU, transporting EU pollution abroad./ REL
