Scientists have developed a laser camera that can read a person's heart rate at a distance and determine signs that he may be suffering from cardiovascular disease.

The system, which uses AI and quantum technologies, could transform the way we monitor our health, say researchers at the University of Glasgow.

Monitoring a person's heart rate from a distance would be particularly valuable because irregularities would provide warning that they are at risk of suffering a stroke or cardiac arrest, said Professor Daniele Faccio of the university's Center for Advanced Research.

Currently, doctors use stethoscopes to monitor heartbeats. Invented in the early 19th century by the French surgeon Rene Laënnec, a stethoscope consists of a disc-shaped resonator which, when placed on a person's body, picks up the sounds that occur.

The system developed by Faccio and his team includes high-speed cameras that can record images at 2,000 frames per second./ CNA
