Europe sets the date for the launch of the Ariane-6 rocket

Europe's next-generation rocket, Ariane-6, looks set to make its first flight in mid-2024, the BBC writes.

The target launch date was announced by Josef Aschbacher, director general of the European Space Agency (ESA).

It follows successful tests on an engineering model of the 62-meter-long vehicle at the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.

Ariane-6 has cost around €4bn (£3.5bn) to develop.

Its delay has added to a deep crisis in Europe, severely limiting the continent's ability to put satellites into orbit.

Europe has essentially no launch service at present, following the retirement of the previous generation rocket, the Ariane-5, in July; and was forced to suspend operations of its medium-lift vehicle, Vega-C, after a series of flight failures.

Europe used to be the dominant force for launching large satellites. For nearly 30 years, Ariane-5 was a popular choice for telecommunications companies that wanted to put the spacecraft high above Earth./ CNA
