European Parliament proposes ban on social media for teenagers under 16

A European Parliament committee today proposed banning access to social media and online artificial intelligence services for children under 16 without their parents' consent, due to the risks they pose to their health and safety.

"MEPs propose setting an EU-wide minimum age of 16 for access to social media, video platforms and AI (artificial intelligence) assistants, unless there is parental consent, and a minimum age of 13 for access to any social network," the European Parliament said in a statement.

MEPs highlighted the risks associated with addiction, mental health and exposure to harmful and illegal materials to justify their proposal.

The proposal, presented by Danish MEP Kristel Saldemose, was approved by a large majority in the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee. It will be submitted to all MEPs at the end of November.

The 27 EU member states are divided on the issue, but the idea of ??adopting a digital age of adults seems to be gaining ground.

At the initiative of Denmark, which holds the rotating EU presidency this six-month period and has just announced a plan to set the digital adulthood age at 15, the European Ministers of Digital Governance expressed their support for Von der Leyen's initiative. /CNA
