The advertising industry knows how to sell itself better than anything else.
This ability was clearly on display at the annual awards ceremony at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, one of the world's most prestigious events for advertising, marketing and commercial creativity, which kicked off on June 16.
"The ad not only expands creative boundaries, but demonstrates the tangible impact that creativity can have on business and society," stated a senior festival official.
Awards were solemnly presented for campaigns promoting beer, chocolate and even the Herpes Foundation in New Zealand.
But an industry that values human creativity is facing a major shake-up from Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Meta, has promised that soon brands will be able to "tell us what objective they want to achieve, how much they want to pay for each result, and then we do everything else."
Meanwhile, Sam Altman from OpenAI believes that "95% of what marketing experts today require from agencies, strategists, and creative professionals will be easily accomplished, almost instantly, and at minimal cost by AI."
Technology has disrupted the advertising industry even earlier this century, when budgets shifted from television, newspapers and traditional media to digital giants like Google and Meta.
But now that AI is entering the creative side of the industry, once considered untouchable by automation, a new revolution is taking hold. Who will come out on top, and will the experts in Cannes be able to maintain the luxurious lifestyle that has characterized them so far?
Parties on yachts and poolside receptions suggest that the advertising market is in good shape.
According to WPP Media, a major advertising buyer, global advertising spending is growing at a steady pace and is expected to grow by around 6% per year for the next three years.
However, this growth is concentrated and is becoming increasingly so.
The four largest ad sellers – Google, Meta, ByteDance and Amazon – accounted for more than half of the global market last year, up from just over a third in 2019. Eight of the ten largest ad sellers are technology companies.
In Cannes, tech companies showcased their strength with luxury structures along the coast, turning the Croisette into a parade of digital dominance.
AI is further strengthening control
Machine learning algorithms significantly improve the accuracy of ad targeting: Meta's Advantage+ system claims to increase return on ad spend by 22%, while Google's Performance Max increases sales by over 10%.

Pasi kanë dominuar pjesën e targetimit dhe matjes, kompanitë teknologjike besojnë tani se mund të krijojnë edhe vetë reklamat, një fushë që deri më tani u përkiste agjencive të specializuara.
Në Kanë, TikTok prezantoi mjete të fuqizuara nga IA, që gjenerojnë reklama video nga teksti apo foto.
Meta prezantoi funksione të reja, si personalizimi automatik i përmbajtjes për audienca të ndryshme në dhjetë gjuhë.
Në fillim të qershorit, Kalshi, kompania amerikane që lejon baste të ligjshme mbi ngjarje ekonomike dhe politike, transmetoi një reklamë televizive me efekte speciale të realizuar përmes IA së Google.
Reklama u krijua për 48 orë, me vetëm 2,000 dollarë buxhet, nga një regjisor që tha me krenari se “isha me pizhame gjatë gjithë xhirimeve”.
Drejtuesit e agjencive këmbëngulin se nuk do të zëvendësohen nga inxhinierë me pizhame. Modelet e IA, të ndërtuara për të dhënë përgjigjen më të pritshme dhe të mundshme, nuk janë të përshtatshme për krijimin e fushatave që tërheqin vërtet vëmendjen.

AI could change the advertising industry in even stranger ways. As search moves from classic engines to AI-powered chatbots, advertisers need to figure out how to get their brands recommended by systems like ChatGPT or Google's Gemini.
Some are already creating promotional content not for humans, but for large language models (LLMs), which process information on the Internet.
Evertune, another startup, analyzes how chatbots perceive brands by asking themselves tens of thousands of questions about different product categories.
When asked to recommend a brand of sheets, for example, models agree on the top three brands, but then they differ significantly in preferences. (Meta’s chatbots prefer the Mellanni brand; Casper is liked by most models except Gemini).
These differences are explained by the data the models were trained on: Google and ChatGPT use content licensed from Reddit, while Meta's model is based more on material from its own social platforms.
To influence LLMs, one must influence their resources, which means building a strong online following.
For large agency groups, this means that classic public relations (PR) methods continue to be vital. “PR is one of the most powerful tools you can use,” says Brian Stempeck, CEO of Evertune.
But there are other techniques. LLMs have difficulty reading graphs, so they need to be translated into text.
Also, AI happily "swallows" detailed product descriptions, which would be boring for humans: a human would probably never read a long list of ingredients in a product, but a language model would, making it possible to recommend the product.
As AI-powered “agents” are increasingly used to perform tasks on behalf of humans, advertisers will need to understand how to influence these digital “helpers.”
Google recently introduced a shopping agent that can notify users when the price of a product drops below a certain level. Soon, these agents will be able to make more complex purchasing decisions.
Online ad sellers are already discussing how much they should charge when ads are viewed by an agent, instead of a human.
The future could be a world where AI creates, targets, and reads ads on its own. In the meantime, advertising experts in Cannes should enjoy the party while it lasts./ Monitor Magazine
