Scientists: Video games positively help in the "battle" against

Excessive video game play can have an impact on our daily lives, mental and physical health. However, new research shows positive aspects that are often ignored.

According to this research, playing specially designed video games may do more than entertain seniors with memory problems.

Scientists found that these games could potentially protect areas of the brain that are susceptible to early forms of Alzheimer's disease, although the study remains in the exploratory stage.

Based on the findings, people with mild cognitive impairment who played video games, which combine physical movement with mental exercise, showed an improvement in their memory.

The study, published in the journal Alzheimer's Research & Therapy, involved 30 older adults with an average age of 72 who had been diagnosed with mild neurocognitive impairment. Most (87%) had laboratory evidence of the cause of their memory problems, with 62% showing signs of Alzheimer's disease.

Half of the group continued with their usual medical care, while the other half used a home gaming system, where players had to stand on a pressure-sensitive platform and manipulate games with body movements while solving puzzles. The system also included breathing exercises to reduce anxiety and improve concentration./CNA
