OFFICIAL: Laporta resigns as Barcelona president, reason revealed

Joan Laporta has resigned as president of Barcelona this Monday, February 9. The decision was taken with the aim of re-running in the elections to be held on March 15.

According to the club's statutes, in order to run for president again, one must first step down from the position of club president.

Laporta resigned after almost five years in office, with his position temporarily held by vice-president Rafa Yuste. Laporta is considered the main favorite in the race where he will face long-time rival Victor Font, as well as candidates Xavier Vilajoana and Marc Ciria.

Around 100,000 members are eligible to vote in the process, which will be held in several centres including Girona, Tarragona, Lleida and Andorra. The club confirmed that postal voting will not be allowed, reverting to standard pre-pandemic rules.

Laporta's last term was marked by the departure of Messi, but also by the recent success with coach Hansi Flick and the return to the "Camp Nou". The winner of the elections will officially take office on July 1.
