Problems in Italy, Chiesa leaves

Italy will be without a key absentee for their World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland. Federico Chiesa has been ruled out of the national team due to injury.

The striker, who had returned to coach Gennaro Gattuso's squad after an absence of nearly two years, will not be available for the next two matches.

Chiesa had refused training at the end of 2025, stating that he did not feel in good physical shape.

During this training camp, he underwent medical examinations, where the national team's medical staff concluded that the player is unable to contribute in the next two matches. Following this assessment and in agreement with his club, Chiesa has left the national team training camp.

In his place, coach Gattuso has decided to call up Cambiaghi, a Bologna player, who is having a positive moment at the club.

Italy prepares for the decisive play-off matches, where the objective is to secure qualification for the World Cup. If Italy overcomes Northern Ireland, it will play in the final against the winner of the Wales-Bosnia and Herzegovina match.
