Iran risks World Cup, reveals which national team could replace it

The tense situation in the Middle East has put Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the US, Mexico and Canada, in serious doubt.

Following the mutual attacks between the US, Israel and Iran, where the death toll has reached alarming figures, the logistics of the tournament and the security of the Iranian delegation have become problematic. Given that Iran has been drawn in Group G and must play all of its matches on American soil, military tensions make their travel almost impossible.

The president of the Iranian Federation, Mehdi Taj, expressed skepticism: "After this attack, we cannot look forward to the World Cup with hope."

On the other hand, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom stated that they are monitoring the situation closely. If Iran withdraws or is expelled, the United Arab Emirates is seen as the leading candidate from the Asian zone to replace the team ranked 20th in the world.

This would be an unprecedented case for a voluntary withdrawal on the eve of the biggest sporting tournament.
