Infantino in trouble, losing support before elections

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing widespread criticism after his decision to extend Folarin Balogun's suspension during the World Cup. Several national federations are reportedly considering changing their stance on Infantino's re-election.

The debate relates to the decision of FIFA's disciplinary committee, which confirmed Balogun's red card but decided that his suspension would be implemented after the end of the World Cup.

Criticism has increased after allegations of interference by US President Donald Trump in the matter. The federations of Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Switzerland have expressed their opposition to the decision.

Infantino's influence is said to have been significantly weakened by the controversy. The issue could also affect future FIFA projects, including the expansion of the Club World Cup and statutory changes after 2031.
