Death toll from Venezuela earthquakes rises, nearly 18,000 people left homeless

The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to 4,561, according to the latest preliminary data released by the speaker of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez.

According to authorities, the number of injured remains at 16,740, while 17,907 people have been left homeless due to the extensive damage caused by the seismic tremors.

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, causing the collapse of hundreds of buildings, significant damage to infrastructure, and disruption of basic services in several regions of the country.

Rescue teams and authorities continue operations in the most affected areas, while thousands of families are taking shelter in temporary centers.

Authorities have warned that the death toll could change, as searches under the rubble and damage assessments are still ongoing.

Meanwhile, the government has called for national and international support to cope with the consequences of the disaster and accelerate the reconstruction process. /CNA
