US citizen infected with Ebola sent to Germany for treatment

An American citizen infected with the Ebola virus has been sent for treatment to Germany and was admitted to Frankfurt University Hospital in the early hours of Monday.

The patient worked for a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the country is facing a severe outbreak of the Ebola virus.

According to the hospital, he arrived at the special isolation unit at around 03:00 local time, having been infected with the Bundibugyo variant of the virus during a stay in Congo. The head of the isolation unit, Timo Wolf, said the patient's condition was currently stable.

The hospital emphasized that the patient is being treated in complete isolation, in a ward separated both structurally and organizationally from the rest of the institution, ensuring that there is no risk to the public or other patients.

This is the second American citizen to receive treatment in Germany after being infected with the Ebola virus. Earlier, an American doctor was treated at the Charité hospital in Berlin and left after two weeks.

The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is considered particularly difficult to contain, as there is still no vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo variant. As of Sunday, health authorities in the country had confirmed 1,926 laboratory-confirmed cases of Ebola and 702 deaths. /CNA
