Shooting in the US/ One person killed, ICE agents involved in the incident

A person has died in Biddeford, Maine, after a shooting incident allegedly involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

According to American media, which refer to a Facebook post by the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, Ryan Fecteau, the incident occurred during the morning hours in the city of Biddeford.

"One person has died. ICE is involved in the incident. Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety are on scene collecting evidence, and an FBI investigation is expected ," Fecteau wrote.

Authorities have cordoned off the area where the incident occurred, while FBI agents are assisting in the investigation. So far, ICE and the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have not issued an official statement on the incident.

The incident comes just days after ICE agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston during a detention operation. According to DHS, he was a Mexican citizen who was illegally in the United States and was attempting to evade arrest.

The two incidents come at a time when US federal authorities have intensified operations against illegal immigration, while the case in Houston has sparked protests and public reactions. /CNA
