Are extras removed? UEFA considers changes to Champions League

UEFA is examining a series of possible changes to the Champions League regulations, with the aim of adapting the competition to the new needs of the international calendar and managing the physical load on players.

One of the most discussed changes is the removal of extra time in knockout matches. In the event of a draw at the end of the regular 90 minutes, the match would immediately go to penalty kicks. The move is being seen as an effective way to reduce the physical and mental strain on players, in a season where the number of matches is expected to increase significantly due to the new competition format.

Another proposal on UEFA's table, according to Bild, is to provide an advantage for the top eight teams in the group stage. These teams would have the right to play the second leg of the knockout stage at home, which is seen as a significant strategic advantage for the more established teams.

Also under consideration is a ban on teams from the same national association facing each other until the quarter-finals. This rule currently applies in some stages of the competition, but the changes aim to make the draw process more consistent and predictable in the knockout stages.

However, any potential changes to the Champions League's structure or rules are not expected to come into effect immediately due to existing television rights contracts, which run until 2027. Any changes that conflict with these agreements will require time and further consultation with UEFA's commercial and organisational partners.
