State pensions in Europe/ Half of countries do not cover living costs,

State pensions in Europe vary significantly from country to country and, in many cases, are not enough to cover basic living costs. According to a study by human resources company Moorepay, in 20 out of 39 European countries pensions do not cover monthly expenses, excluding rent.

The study shows that the percentage of living costs covered by pensions ranges from just 22% in Georgia to 225% in Luxembourg. In the latter, the average pension amounts to around 28,790 euros per year, while living costs are around 12,791 euros, creating a significant surplus.

Other countries with pensions that significantly exceed the cost of living include Italy (210%), Finland (208%), Spain (199%) and Denmark (189%). In these countries, pensioners manage to cover basic expenses without great difficulty.

Meanwhile, in many countries in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, the situation is more difficult. Albania and Ukraine cover only 29% of living costs, while Moldova reaches 42%. Even in countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina (53%) and North Macedonia (61%), pensions remain insufficient.

Experts point out that the differences are mainly related to the economic level and the structure of pension systems. According to the OECD, about 66% of the income of people over 65 in Europe comes from public transfers, making pensions the main source of income.

Overall, there is a clear regional divide: in Northern and Western Europe pensions often cover or exceed living costs, while in Eastern Europe and the Balkans they usually cover only a part of them./ CNA
