Good sleep is key to avoiding depression, scientists say.

A University College London study found that getting less than five hours of regular sleep a night can increase the risk of depression.

Experts thought that poor sleep was a symptom of poor mental health.

Odessa Hamilton said: "We determined that short sleep likely precedes symptoms of depression, and not the other way around."

It is thought that a third of Britons will experience sleep problems in their lifetime, while one in four will experience mental health problems such as depression.

UCL researchers used genetic and health data from 7,146 people in England and identified genetic variants that indicated whether participants were prone to depression or short sleep./ CNA
