Sugarcane, under the power of smog/Burning of peat, a concern for the residents

For more than 3 months, about 1,500 residents of Sheqeras village of Maliq Municipality have been under the power of smoke from peat burning.

Residents complain that heavy wind and smog invade their village, forcing them to wear masks every morning and fear for their lives and that of their children.

They demand a solution from the institutions which so far have not taken measures to prevent it.

Even the children who go to school every day say that this situation causes them a problem by not allowing them to open the windows during the lesson.

The problem is accepted by the mayor of Malik Gëzim Topçiu, who says that the situation remains difficult despite the efforts, since the peat has the characteristic of burning up to 3 meters deep and there is no specific hearth.

This situation has been going on since the summer season yesterday, it seems that the only solution remains the beginning of the rains. There are about 5,000 hectares of peat land in this municipality./ CNA
