Social alarm in Korça/Repeated suicide attempts among minors

The repeated cases of attempted suicide by minor girls in the Dhëmbi family in Korça have raised the alarm about the social situation and the response of the responsible institutions. Experts consider this a serious situation, where the repetition of events indicates a deep crisis within the family, but also in society itself. Sociologist Maria Deutsche emphasizes that acts of suicide cannot be seen in isolation from the social and institutional context.

"It is a repeated act and this is even more serious than the act itself. The signs of suicide show a turbulence of social function. So society is in decline, institutions are in decline. Suicide is an alarming sign when we understand how a society works."

She underlines that at the core of these cases lie social factors, which directly affect the psychological state of the individual. According to her, a key element is an in-depth analysis of the situation within the family, especially when there is more than one such case.

"We always refer acts of suicide to the psychological states of the person, but in fact, psychology is affected by the social condition. We must know that the social fact is the basis. We must look at the socio-economic situation of the family because in the case when we have two people in the family, it means that something is not working and it is in deep crisis. We must look at the relationship they have with their parents, care, financial situation, everything that makes a family functional."

Deutsch also focuses on the role of institutions, emphasizing that intervention should have been immediate after the first case. According to her, the assessment should also have included the condition of the children to prevent the situation from escalating.

"Social Service employees at the Municipality should have appeared in this family to measure the psychological state of the mother because it greatly affects the child. What is the mother's relationship with the father like, because this aggravates the situation even more. The second thing is to see and check the psycho-emotional state of the children. After the first case, there should have been a measurement of the psycho-emotional and financial state of the family, as well as taking precautionary measures to prevent a second case."

Experts warn that lack of timely intervention can lead to even more serious consequences, as the act of suicide is considered a final stage of psycho-emotional degradation.

"The act of suicide is a final psycho-emotional degradation where a person is unable to cope with the problems. It is a serious situation and it seems that the family is in a deep crisis."

In its analysis, Deutsche also includes other social factors, such as lack of community support and the phenomenon of bullying.

"Bullying also definitely affects, because today in school and in the community the individual does not find support and warmth. In a society where empathy is more developed, even when the family is in crisis, the community becomes a shield for the individual."

While the case remains a wake-up call for all levels of society, experts emphasize that immediate intervention and coordination of institutions is vital to prevent further tragedies, placing the protection and well-being of children at the center./ CNA
