Study: Reading and mental activities may delay Alzheimer's

Activities that stimulate the brain, such as reading, solving puzzles and learning new skills, may help delay Alzheimer's disease and slow cognitive decline, according to a new study.

Researchers found that people who regularly engage in intellectual activities are less likely to develop dementia. These activities include reading and writing, learning a new language, playing games like chess or puzzles, visiting museums or cultural activities.

Neuropsychologists explain that these activities "stretch" the brain and activate different cognitive systems.

The study involved nearly 2,000 people aged 53-100 who did not have dementia at the start. They were followed for eight years and underwent neurological tests.

The results showed that people with more mental activity throughout their lives developed Alzheimer's about 5 years later than those with lower activity;

Researchers point out that even if someone didn't have much intellectual activity in their youth, starting in middle age may still be beneficial for brain health./CNA
