Study: Cherries may help slow down an aggressive form of breast cancer

A new study suggests that natural compounds found in dark sweet cherries may help slow the growth of an aggressive form of breast cancer.

The research was conducted by a team of scientists at Texas A&M University, who analyzed plant compounds called anthocyanins – the substances that give cherries their deep red color. According to the study results, these compounds were able to slow tumor growth and reduce the spread of cancer to other organs in laboratory tests on mice.

The study focused on triple-negative breast cancer, a form of the disease that is considered more aggressive and more difficult to treat, as it lacks estrogen, progesterone receptors or the HER2 protein – elements that usually serve as targets for therapies.

According to scientist Giuliana Noratto from the Department of Food Science and Technology at Texas A&M, this type of cancer has a rapid rate of cell division and is more likely to spread to other organs, such as the lungs and brain.

In the study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, mice were divided into four groups: some received anthocyanins from cherries before tumors formed, some were treated with chemotherapy alone, one group received a combination of both, while another served as a control group.

The results showed that mice that received the cherry compounds had slower tumor growth and less spread of the cancer to other organs. When these compounds were combined with chemotherapy, the positive effects appeared even earlier in the treatment.

However, the researchers emphasize that these results are still in the early stages, as the study was only conducted in animals. According to them, further research is needed to understand whether these compounds could have the same effect in humans and how they could be used in combination with existing anti-cancer treatments./ CNA
